VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict on Wednesday ordered that the Roman Catholic Church's extensive worldwide charity network be immediately activated to help the victims of the devastating earthquake in Haiti.

Speaking at his weekly general audience, the pope also appealed to the international community and individuals to be quick and generous in their aid.

"The Catholic Church will immediately activate (its aid) through its charity institutions in order to respond to the most urgent needs of the population," he said.

A major earthquake struck the capital of impoverished Haiti on Tuesday, flattening buildings and burying hundreds, possibly thousands, of people under the rubble, witnesses said.

The Catholic Church has one of the world's largest and most capillary charity networks.

"I appeal to everyone's generosity, so that these brothers and sisters of ours who are living through a time of need and pain receive our concrete solidarity and the effective help of the international community," he said.

Around 80 percent of Haiti's 10 million-strong population is Catholic and 16 percent Protestant. However, most Haitians also practice voodoo, a mixture of Christian and African beliefs.

Archbishop of Port-au-Prince dies in Haiti earthquake E-mail
Friday, 15 January 2010 15:58

Monsignor Joseph Serge Miot, the archbishop of Port-au-Prince, has been killed in the Haiti earthquake. He was 63.

Missionaries at the archdiocese found his body crushed by rubble in the ruins of his office, said the Rev Pierre Le Beller of the Saint Jacques Missionary Centre in western France.

A seminary student was killed and two others were injured in the quake, according to the mission.

The Saint Jacques order of missionary priests was officially founded in 1951 by the bishop of Gonaives, Haiti. While headquartered in France, it retains a strong presence in Haiti and traces its unofficial missionary activity to 1860.

Born in Jeremie, Haiti, on November 23, 1946, Miot was ordained a Roman Catholic priest in 1975.

He was consecrated a bishop in 1997, and named deputy to the archbishop of Port-au-Prince, a title he held until being named archbishop himself in 2008.

"He was a demanding, and understanding, priest," said the Rev Michel Menard, also of the Saint Jacques mission, who met regularly with Miot in Haiti. "He was man of great discretion and humility."

"He was very close to his priests, very welcoming," and his door was always open to visitors, Menard said.

Miot, a philosophy professor at the Port-au-Prince seminary, "would tell students that being a priest is not a profession, it is a mission," Menard told AP by phone from the Brittany town of Landivisiau.

Catholic Radio Dream Team E-mail
Thursday, 01 October 2009 00:00

Recently, two creative forces have been added to the mix. Station Manager Daniel diSilva and Office Manager Daniel Lord have been brought on board to fully launch the station, hoping to “go live” by Easter 2010. Both bring extensive theology and audio production backgrounds to the mission. “We want to air solid Catholic broadcasting, including news, apologetics, and call-in shows for Catholics and non-Catholics to enjoy,” says diSilva. “Archangel Radio, augmented by our new website, seeks to be the hub of all Catholic information that is important to the people of our Archdiocese.” The Daniels will be broadcasting from a small loft across from St. Lawrence Church in Fairhope which they like to call “The Upper Room.”
